How to choose a guardian
You love your children more than anything. You’d stop at nothing to protect them. But what happens if you’re gone? Who’s going to make sure that they’re safe? That they feel loved? That they’re raised the way you want? If you haven’t named a guardian, then a judge who doesn’t know the first thing about you or your family is going to choose for you. You don’t want that.
Key factors to consider when selecting a guardian:
- Relationship with your children: How well do they know and interact with your children?
- Stability and values: Do they have a stable lifestyle and share your values regarding parenting and upbringing?
- Financial stability: Can they afford to provide for your children's basic needs, including food, shelter, and education?
- Age and health: Are they physically and mentally capable of raising your children long-term?
- Location: Where do they live, and is it a suitable environment for your children?
- Parenting style: Do you agree with their approach to discipline and child-rearing?
- Willingness to take on the role: Have you openly discussed the responsibility of being a guardian with them?
